BVSc Veterinary Science

After I graduated from Bristol Vet School in 1994 I worked for a period in mixed, mainly small animal practice in North Somerset, continuing to do so while undertaking a PhD in Bristol. Since completing my PhD in 1998 I spent the next 14 years working part time at Bristol undertaking research in clinical analgesia in the dog and cat alongside starting a family. In 2013, I started to move away from clinical research and into teaching and related academic roles. I now teach professional skills to undergraduate vet students and am responsible for the Professional Studies Units across all 5 years of the BVSc programme.  Additionally, I have been Vet School Admissions Tutor from 2013 to 2018 and Faculty Admissions and Recruitment Office for the Faculty of Health Sciences since 2015. My current interests are introducing mental wellbeing training to the student population and selection of students onto healthcare programmes focussing on widening participation.

Activities / Findings

2011 Licensing of Methadone (Comfortan, Eurovet) for use in the dog.  A full mu opioid agonist which may be administered by all routes that provides dose dependent analgesia for around 4 hours per dose.

I work within the undergraduate programmes within the veterinary school. I lead the professional studies unit for veterinary science BVSc years 1-5 inclusive; this unit encompasses communication skills; business management; health and safety; ethics welfare and the law; and personal development including study skills, employability and professionalism. My teaching encompasses managing your wellbeing/ mental health, study skills, communication skills, business management and employability topics. I also lecture in anaesthesia and analgesia to veterinary and veterinary nursing students.
