Research summary

This study aims to provide an assessment of the official individual-merit-based approach to tackling poverty and promoting social justice for Mexican youth. Based on an analysis of the individual and contextual-level factors of youth poverty, youth labour precariousness and educational disadvantage the research argues for a shift in the guiding principles of social justice towards an approach more consistent with the fulfilment of social and economic rights in accordance with Mexican legislation. The study draws upon theories of social justice, recent developments of the human rights framework and contemporary conceptualisations of youth transitions.
