    Abstract

The chapter explores the translation and publication history of three prominent Swedish popular female writers in Czech. Emily Flygare-Carlen, Marie Sophie Schwartz (and to some extent also Fredrika Bremer) share some genre features as well as translation, publication and reception history in the Czech lands. The chapter reveals the identity, history and motivation of their Czech publisher, it explores the Czech national and gender emancipation discourse surrounding these authors and surveys their popularity in the latter half of the 19th century and well into the 20th century.
