Research summary

He is the founder of Irish Slavonic Studies, which he edited from 1980-1986. During the 1990s he was series editor of 'Russian Texts and Critical Studies in Russian Literature' for Bristol Classical Press.

He has edited the Reference Guide to Russian Literature (1988), and numerous books, including Daniil Kharms and the Poetics of the Absurd, The Society Tale in Russian Literature: from Odoevskii to Tolstoi, and The Gothic-Fantastic in Nineteenth-Century Russian Literature (1999).  He is also the Russian editor of The Literary Encyclopedia.

(BA 1972, PhD 1983) is a specialist in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Russian literature, and in comparative literature. He taught at Queen's University, Belfast, from 1973-87, before he came to Bristol in 1987.
