Summary

Dr Foster leads the language teaching team and is responsible for its overall management and strategy.  He is also Year Abroad Officer for the School. 

He teaches translation and interpreting classes in the Department of German and collaborates with colleagues in French, Spanish and Russian to deliver interpreting courses for those languages.

His research background is in German Studies, specifically Austrian culture and history since 1870. He has written and spoken on language learning and technology in recent years.

 

Biography

Dr Foster joined the university in 2012.  In 2015 he was appointed Deputy Head Language Teaching.

He previously worked at the University of Salford, where he was Director of Languages (2011-12) and a Senior Lecturer in German, specialising in translating and interpreting. He also ran the Salford Language Resource Centre from 2004-2009.

He has a long-standing interest in Learning Technologies and the professional development of University Language Teachers.

He was Conference Secretary for the Association for German Studies in Britain and Ireland from 2000 to 2006 and is an examiner and moderator for the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
