Research summary

I am a first-year PhD student working with Profs. Malcolm Bremer and Steve Phillipps on the evolution of nearby galaxy clusters, particularly on how and why their populations differ from equivalent field galaxies. Initially I am analysing K-band data taken with the UKIRT (UKIDSS) by our collaborator Dr. Roberto de Propris, matching it with optical data from the SDSS and SuperCOSMOS archives to derive composite luminosity functions in order to separate the red sequence and blue cloud populations. The K-band data is less affected than optical images by infra-red emissions from dust and the initial indications are that good results ...

After graduating from the University of Bristol in physics in the class of 1986 I took a MSc conversion course at UCL to IT and joined Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Bristol where I worked as a computer science researcher until the beginning of 1999 when, having meanwhile obtained a MA in Film Studies and European Cinema part-time from UWE, I joined as a data editor. I left IMDb in the spring of 2102 to realise a long-held ambition to return to science, my appetite having been whetted by my old lecturer Dr. Rodney Hillier's lectures on astronomy and ...
