Professor Ole Thomsen

Biography

Ole Thybo Thomsen is the NCC Chair in Composites Manufacturing and Design, Bristol Composites Institute (ACCIS) and Department of Aerospace Enginering, University of Bristol & the National Composites Centre (NCC).

Previous positions: University of Southampton, School of Engineering; Aalborg University, Denmark; Eurpoean Space Agency, European Space Technology and Research Centre (ESTEC), the Netherlands, the University of Delaware, Center for Composite Materials (CCM)USA; and Israel Institute of Technology - Technion, Israel.

Prestigious appointments: Chairman, Technology/Production Research Council of the Independent Research Fund Denmark 2012‐2014 (equivalent to EPSRC); Fellow, Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (equivalent to FREng) 2007; Knighthood, Her Royal Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, 2012. Authored more than 120 papers in Scientific journals.

PI/CoI for numerous research grants through national and international research Funding agencies (Denmark, EU, USA, UK – total grant income in excess of £30M), involving close collaboration with industry and international research institutions. 

Main research interests:  design, manufacturing and experimental and computational characterisation of lightweight composite structures. 

Chaired several international conferences and symposia focuising on composite materials. Most recently the 20th International Conference on Composite Materials (ICCM20), Copenhagen 2015, with almost 2000 participants one of the the largest conference ever on composites.
