I am a lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, based in QETlabs - the Quantum Engineering Technologies Labs - and the Photonics research group.
I work on quantum dots: nanoscale inclusions of one semiconductor embedded in another. The quantum dots - sometimes called "artificial atoms" - provide 3D confinement of the electrons and holes on a length scale of a few nanometers, leading to the formation of discrete, atom-like energy levels localized within the quantum dot.
