Lindsay Clare obtained a BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from University College Swansea in 1987 whilst on special leave from British Telecom, but left British Telecom in 1988 to join GEC-Marconi Avionics, working on switched-mode power supply design. From 1994 to 1998 he worked as a Research Associate in the Electrical Engineering Department in the University of Bristol, on an electrical power-conditioning project sponsored by DRA, now Quinetiq.
