Research summary

My general research interests are in the pathogenesis of Head and Neck squamous cell carcinoma, the identification of potential biomarkers and biobanking.  I am a member of the Head and Neck 5000 planning group and assist in coordinating the collection and transfer of biological samples and linked pathological data from participating units across the UK.  I currently contribute to several externally funded multi-centre studies.  These aim to determine the incidence of oncogenic HPV infection in patients diagnosed with oropharyngeal carcinoma in the UK and to seek potential biomarker combinations that may predict treatment outcome.

I received my dental degree from the University of Bristol in 1997 and after a period of general professional training was awarded MFDS by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1999.  I obtained further clinical experience in Oral Medicine, Pathology and Maxillofacial Surgery prior to receiving an award in 2001 from the Shirley Glasstone Hughes Trust Fund to undertake a laboratory based research project.  This examined Transforming Growth factor-Beta dependent Smad signalling in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas and included a secondment to the Oral and Pharyngeal cancer Group, National Institutes of Health ...
