Dr Stephen Montgomery

Biography

I came to Bristol in 2019 as a Senior Research Fellow, funded by a NERC Fellowship and an ERC Starter Grant, and Proleptic Senior Lecturer. I lead the Evolution of Brains and Behaviour (EBaB) lab, which was initially founded in 2016 at the Dept. of Zoology, University of Cambridge. This was my second stint at Cambridge having previously studied Natural Sciences there as an undergraduate, followed by a PhD on primate brain evolution with Nick Mundy.

In between, I was a member of Judith Mank’s lab, very briefly in Oxford and then at UCL, funded by successive early-career fellowships from The Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 and The Leverhulme Trust. These fellowships allowed me to start a series of projects on brain evolution in Neotropical butterflies that developed into the research projects we are now persuing as a lab.
