Human-wildlife conflict, specifically the impact of light pollution on the environment.

Andy has been a teaching-focused academic within the School of Biological Sciences since October 2015. He is the incoming Head of Year 4 (Aug 2020), is the School lead for technology enhanced learning (TEL) and acts as one of 50 UoB Digital Champions. He is keen on delivering interactive teaching sessions, novel assessment methods and group/collaborative learning experiences. He teaches across all four years of the biology, zoology and plant sciences degree programmes and has personal tutoring responsibility at each year group. He is specifically interested in the topics of ecology, conservation biology and science communication, all of which he teaches at level 2. During his PhD (Bristol) he investigated the impact of artificial lighting on insects and bats.

Activities / Findings

2013 - 2016: For my PhD thesis I investigated how new technology street lights, specifically light-emitting diodes (LEDs) might be affecting insect behaviour and ecology.

2009 - 2012. Prior to my PhD I collaborated on a few different bat-related research projects based at the University of Bristol.

During the 2019/20 academic year Andy was unit director for second year undergraduate course on ecology. Andy also teaches on the units 'conservation biology', 'science and success', life processes' and 'advanced practical skills'. He is a superviser for third year practical-project and literature review students as well as a fourth year MSci project student. He acts as personal tutor to students across years 1-4.

Andy currently co-supervises one MRes student and one PhD canditate.
