Personal profile

My research focuses on music, sound and the moving image, focusing particularly on the ways in which cinema shapes and is shaped by ideologies of community. My PhD thesis examined the use of music in the popular cinemas of the Third Reich and the Soviet Union and demonstrated that music was a significant means of fostering a sense of community that fed into the regimes’ political ideology. I am interested in film music from the perspective of emotion and affect and have published on music and humour in Stalinist musical films.

I was Teaching Associate in the music department in 2018-19 and Assistant Teacher between 2014-2018.

I currently work as Senior Research Administrator for the ESRC 'Everyday Integration' project in the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies and as Research Impact Administrator in the School of Humanities.

Research interests: Music, sound and the moving image; film music and politics; nationalism, ethnicity, and migration; European cinema; music and affect; history of the senses; cultural history of early 20th century music; 20th century Russian music.
