Research summary

My research concentrates on the epidemiology and treatment of kidney disease – acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney disease.


Much of my research over the years has involved registries, indeed this was why I chose to undertake my renal training in Bristol, home of the UK Renal Registry. I have been very fortunate to be medical director of UKRR from October 2013 - January 2019 and continue to work closely with colleagues there on ongoing projects, most notably:

I graduated from the University of Glasgow and went on to obtain a Masters in Public Health and Health Services Research and then an MD in the Cost-effectiveness of Dialysis in Europe from the University of Aberdeen. I have been working as a Consultant Nephrologist in Bristol since 2005 and became Medical Director of the UK Renal Registry in 2013. I am involved in a number of NIHR and Health Foundation funded research projects utilising techniques such record linkage, causal modelling and registry trials.
