Research summary

Her early research interests focused on mid-sixteenth-century Florentine cultural history, specifically  the milieu of the Accademia Fiorentina and the figure of the academician and polymath,  Cosimo Bartoli. She has also published on modern Italian literature, particularly the feminist author, Dacia Maraini. In the last twenty years, however, her work has centred on mid- to late-fifteenth-century Florence with a series of studies on issues of gender and culture. Judith Bryce went on from Inverness Royal Academy to study Italian and French at the University of Aberdeen (MA, 1970), completing a PhD, also at Aberdeen, in 1977. She was appointed to a lectureship at the University of Hull in 1973, going on to become head of department before taking up the first chair of Italian at the University of Bristol in 1994. She was head of department from 1994 to 2000 and chair of the School of Modern Languages from 2003-06.
