Dr Kathleen Sedgley

I have worked with the synthetic biology community in Bristol since 2007 when we applied for and were awarded Research Council funding for a Network in Synthetic Biology. In 2014 we were awarded £13.6m from BBSRC and EPSRC to support BrisSynBio, and were established as a University Specialist Research Institute; Bristol BioDesign Institute in 2017.

As BrisSynBio and Bristol Biodesign Institute Scientific Manager I am responsible for: the overall management of BrisSynBio; working alongside the Director to implement the BrisSynBio strategic vision; representing BrisSynBio at both national and international fora; and identifying and supporting new academic, commercial and third sector partnerships.

My team also supports the EPSRC / BBSRC funded Synthetic Biology Centre for Doctoral Training.

I graduated with a BSc in pharmacology from the University of Bristol where I then stayed to complete my PhD in the Henry Wellcome Laboratories for Integrative Neuroscience and Endocrinology. My graduate and post graduate training both instilled a passion for basic biomedical research.

Since graduating I have accumulated over 10 years of experience in research administration and management, firstly at the academic cardiac unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, and more recently within the University's Research and Enterprise Development division as Research Development Manager for the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.
